Signed, Outraged Parent
We interrupt my usual rambling to bring you the letter I just sent to my school district's superintendent and school board. I'm sad to say that ours is one of the school districts that will NOT be airing the President's Speech on Education this Tuesday. It takes a lot to get me to actually write a letter, so that tells you how strongly I oppose their decision. In the interest of "full disclosure," here it is:
I am writing to you to express my outrage that the Hampton Township School District will not be airing President Barack Obama’s “Speech on Education” on Tuesday. The school district takes pride in its motto: “A Tradition of Excellence.” There is nothing excellent about censoring a speech by our President. It is embarrassing, and bordering on unpatriotic. No one would have thought of censoring our previous President were he to deliver such a speech.
I do not see how a back-to-school speech to students on the “importance of taking responsibility for their education, challenging them to set goals, and doing everything they can to succeed” (source: www.whitehouse.gov) can in anyway be perceived as advancing some hidden agenda. There’s no doubt that the President was born in Hawaii; there’s no doubt that there are no “death panels” in any health care bill; and there’s no doubt that the President’s speech about staying in school and doing your best is not a socialist/communist/Satanist/abortionist plot to poison our children’s minds. It is a Speech on Education, not an indoctrination or political message.
Have we lost all respect for the Office of the President? Have we let a bullying group of liars prevent our President from speaking to our children? I hadn’t voiced an opinion on this earlier, because I felt I didn’t have to. I figured there was no way that the Hampton Township School District would fall victim to the lies and pressures of a lunatic fringe. We must consider the sources of the opposition to the President’s speech. They have lost all credibility and should be rebuked.
I wonder how anyone can think that a message from our sitting President is not an “appropriate topic for current event discussions” in our Social Study classes. (emphasis, mine.) A message on the importance of education. The behavior of the Hampton Township School District and their decision on this topic is both appalling and ridiculous. You’ve said you will be giving High School students the choice to “opt out” of any showing/discussion of the broadcast at a later date. But you never gave any children, of any age, the chance to “opt in” to see it live at school on Tuesday.
We can agree that there is nothing more important than the education of our children. But what sort of example are we setting for them? Are we teaching young people to disrespect our President? It is because I feel so strongly about the importance of a good education that I will be sending my children to school on Tuesday, instead of keeping them at home to watch the speech live. Up until now, I have been proud to send my children to school in the Hampton Township School District. But I feel it’s harmful to the school district’s reputation to even question the airing of the President’s speech. A speech by a man who should be admired for the dedication he has shown for accomplishing his goals. I will be recording President Obama’s speech so that my children can watch it with me, and we can discuss in a positive way what the President has to say about succeeding in school, and what they can do to achieve their goals.
